Anything, Adrianne Lenker

Dear Reader,

Listening to “Anything by Adrianne Lenker. This song quenches something in my chest like only a good song can.

I was scared indigo but I wanted to

I was scared indigo but I wanted to

I don’t wanna talk about anything
I don’t wanna talk about anything
I wanna kiss kiss your eyes again

wanna witness your eyes again

I wanna sleep in your car while you’re driving

laying in your lap while I’m crying

potent/delicate/shy intimacy of her lyrics along with the consistent beat and melody of her guitar in the back gives me chills. There is something so childlike and lilting about the sound of her voice, yet tinged with a haunted maturity, a melancholy. I don’t know if its right to assign characteristics to a voice, but this is how it sounds to me. Chills as I listen still and its been 10 minutes of the same song. Her lyrics. “I was scared indigo” is particularly — what single word can even convey how these words feel, in her voice, in her song? transcendent, ethereal, honest, a wisdom in those words. “Listen to your hands soothe” “Listen to the way you move…” Ah, these words feel like easing into a warm bath after a tired day out in the world. It feels cozy and yearning and vulnerable. and sad. Something so sad about it. The melody itself? C minor key. The chord progression of the chorus: C minor with a 7th chord, Bbadd11 Ab major 9th. She offsets the minor key chorus with chords in Eb major. Very clever. and sonically amazing.
